Jembatan Merah
Translated as The Red Bridge. One of the most savage battles on Java's history was fought around here. The "Battle of Surabaya" began on 10 November 1945, less than three months after the proclamation of Independence had been read in Jakarta and it was right here that Brigadier General Mallaby was killed. Jembatan Merah is a trade area in East Surabaya region dissociating of Kembang Jepun Street and Rajawali Street. Around the bridge, there is economics indicators, include one of them is Jembatan Merah Plaza.
Kya Kya - China TownFurther down from the Red bridge is China Town, an area packed with buildings of typical Chinese construction. It is still a crowded business and trace center. In the night, this place turns into center of local foods, national, even international.
To glorious this situation of night, it presents small entertainment amusement podium (light music) both traditional music and also modern music ( tionghoa, arab, jawa) even contemporary (poem etc) or which known by the public ( dangdut, gambus, etc) or which appreciative ( jazz etc), without bother the possibility of the performing of spiritual event (at night in religious days). Mpu Tantular MuseumAn ethnographic museum opposite the entrance to the zoo, stands on Jl. Taman Mayangkara No. 6 Surabaya. It is housing relics from the prehistorical period, stone relics from the Majapahit period, Chiness, Annamese and Majapahit ceramics, wayang figures of old Surabaya and early batik-making equipment.
Mpu Tantular choosen as a name for National Museum of East Java because to respected his point of view about live in Indonesia and its called Power Element National of Indonesia which is Bhineka Tunggal Ika. Mpu Tantular is a philologist from Esat Java who was live in 14th Century. When he have research about the glorious period of Majapahit Kingdom. Open daily from 08.00 am - 02.00 pm except on Mondays.
Loka Jala Crana Museum
Located in Morokrambangan at the Indonesia navy base to the south of Surabaya Port. This museum displays battle equipment of the Indonesia navy. Also a collection of pinetarium and astronavigadium. Open daily from 08.00 am - 14.00 pm.
DHD 45 Museum
DHD 45 (Dewan Harian Daerah 45) museum located at Jalan Mayjen Sungkono displays the development and progress of the Indonesian armed forces and its role in the struggle for the nation's independence. A collection of cyclorama and auditorium. Open daily from 08.00 am - 02.00 pm.
Heroes MonumentThe Heroes Monument is a warrior spirit symbol of "arek-arek Suroboyo" (Surabaya's People) in faced the colonist. This is a tall commemorative monument, standing aloof and proud in the center of the main city square - Kebon Raja, opposite the East Java Governor's office at Jalan Pahlawan. It was erected in honour of the merits and sacrifices of the heroes fallen during the "battle of Surabaya". The monument becomes a center of major attention every November 10th - The Heroes Day, the day when the nation commemorates those who died during the war of independence. This Heroes Monument have of 40,45 meters height or 45 yards, with diameter under 3,10 meters and diameter to 1,30 meters. At underside of the monument is decorated with ‘"Trisula" engraving pictorial, ‘"Cakra", ‘"Stamba" and ‘"Padma" as fire struggle symbol.
Majapahit Mandarin Oriental Hotel
Originally built in 1910, Hotel Majapahit is a classic landmark hotel filled with national pride, where an impressive history blends with romance and elegance. It is another (recently renovated) old building that evokes nostalgic memories for Indonesia. Here on the hotel's flagpole, the Indonesian flag was raised for the first time by Surabaya's youth, this incident ignited the widely known 'battle of Surabaya'.
Suro and Boyo MonumentThis Monument, depicting a legendary fight between a shark (suro) and a crocodile (boyo) which gave Surabaya its name. It is designed as the symbol of Surabaya City. two creatures which, in a local myth , fought each other in order to gain the title of "the strongest and most powerful animal" in the area according to a Jayabaya prophecy. This prophecy tells about a big fight between a giant white shark and a giant white crocodile in seizing the city upstream. This folk etymology, though embraced enthusiastically by city leaders, is somewhat dubious. Alternate derivations proliferate: e.g. from the Javanese ''sura ing baya'', meaning "bravely facing danger". Some people consider this Jayabaya prophecy as a great war between Surabaya native people and invaders in 1945, while another story is about two heroes that fought each other in order to be the king of the city. The two heroes were Sura and Baya. This monument is located opposite the entrance to the zoo.
Surabaya ZooThe zoo, located at Jalan Setail 1, is said to be the largest zoo in South East Asia. No less than 3.500 heads of animals from 400 species of mammals, birds and reptiles are being kept there. The Zoo exhibits a good selection of different kinds of animals, such as monkeys, deers, zebras, lions, elephants, cames, and the famous komodo, the world's largest lizard for which the island of Komodo in the lesser Sunda chain is famous. The Nocurama section house a collection of bats, flying squirrels and various other night animals. The Zoo is easily to be reached by Taxi or public transportation (buses, bemo, etc). Open daily 09.00 am - 05.00 pm.
Kayoon Park and Flower Market
Located along the western bank of Kayoon River. It is an evening recreation park and specific East Java Food Center. A variety of water sport are performed here, i.e. sailing, swimming, motor boating and even canoe racer. To the north of Kayoon Park is the Kayoon Market, seiling beautiful orchids and tropical decorative aquarium fishes.
The Submarine Monument is one of the tourism objects that located in the heart of the city at Pemuda Street 39 surabaya, in the bank of the Kalimas river. This is the real submarine of KRI Pasopati 410, one of Indonesia's Navy Armada. It is a Russian submarine SS Whiskey Class. It was made in 1952. KRI Pasopati 410 was involved in the Arafura Sea battle to fee West Irian (Papua) from Dutch occupation. It has now become a monument to commemorate the bravery of Indonesia's heroes.
Surabaya East Java's historical City of Heroes, now boasts a brand new must-see tourist attractions - the 'House of Sampoerna' Museum, Art gallery and Cafe. Situated in 'old Surabaya', the beautiful stately Dutch colonial-style compound was built in 1862 and is now a preserved historical site. Purchased in 1932 by Liem Seeng Tee, the founder of Sampoerna, one of the oldest as well as the fastest growing manufacturer of kretek (tobacco and clove) cigarettes in Indonesia. The original central auditorium is now a Museum and East Side has been transformed into a unique structure containing a cozy and homey cafe, a Merchandise Kiosk an Art Gallery. The building on the West Side remains the official family residence.
